Awards Night

Saturday afternoon I embarked on a two hour drive to attend my gym's awards night and banquet. The Awards Night was hosted to celebrate the achievements of Competitive stream athletes across all disciplines. Athletes from Men's Artistic Gymnastics (MAG), Woman's Artistic Gymnastics (WAG), Rhythmic Gymnastics and Acrobatic Gymnastics were represented. The event was hosted at an all inclusive facility. The facility was located far out in the country and consisted of a gymnastics centre, dining hall, dormitories, general store and a ski lodge. The location was very new, clean and aesthetically appealing.

The Awards Night was scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. with an hour to socialize beforehand. Around 6:00 p.m. the MC arrived. We started the evening with dinner. Pastas, lasagne, salads and an assortment of drinks were available. I was extremely impressed by the fact that there was a gluten free option and that those whom couldn't eat gluten were able to grab plates first. I hadn't expected to be able to eat any of the cuisine. In preparation for the evening I had packed leftovers and a muffin from the previous day. The food was okay. The gluten-free chicken linguini was slightly cold but I suspect that it was made first as not to contaminate it. The kitchen staff deserve two thumbs up. If only the desserts and salads had been gluten-free. They served chocolate pudding, cinnamon buns and Jello cups with whipping cream. Everyone commented that the pudding was amazing. I wish I could have had some.

The official ceremony began after dinner. Each gymnast in attendance received some form of recognition for their hard work and dedication during the season. I received a Certificate of Excellence. One athlete each from MAG, WAG, Rhythmic and Acrobatics also received an Athlete of the Year plaque for their specific discipline. Another athlete from WAG received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

After the ceremony was completed there was a dance and bonfire. Myself and some of the older athletes headed home at this point as we either had coursework or other responsibilities. I left the banquet and made it home just before the sun disappeared. Perfect timing. Overall, Awards Night was a success. There weren't a lot of athletes in attendance, most likely because of the location and price of tickets, however everyone there enjoyed themselves. Lots of happy athletes, proud parents and coaches.

Cheers,

Susan
