APRIL FAVOURITES: MY SWITCH TO A SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE (Recipes, Makeup, Fashion, Ect.)

This month's blog post features: many tears, ups and downs, trial and error and finally...the perfect April favourites. For those of you who have been following my blog for awhile (WE JUST HIT 10,400 VIEWS, WOW), you will know that I've been trying to become more environmentally conscious. I've done a lot of research and have been making a plethora of lifestyle changes. It's been hard work but I feel amazing, and I wanted to share some of my eco-friendly changes to help inspire you to make a difference too. Now let's dive right in!

MY FAVOURITE WAY TO READ:

Goodbye paper, hello app. I've switched from reading paperback novels to downloading digital novels. To be fair, the majority of my library has been comprised of digital copies for years but I've finally gone completely paper-free. I've been reading on my phone however if you like to read a lot, I would recommend getting a Kindle. The Kindle Paperwhite is my favourite of the many e-readers out there. (I used to own one!) I would highly recommend the Paperwhite because of it's unique screen lighting. The screen is not backlit and instead the light is directed towards the screen making itless harsh too read than your typical tablet.

MY FAVOURITE BOOK/AUDIOBOOK:

You didn't think I'd forget my book of the month?! This month's book is The Tale's of Beetle the Bard by J.K. Rowling. I absolutely love the world of Harry Potter and this book is no exception. It's currently FREE to download on Audible as a audiobook (without needing a new membership). Go check it out.

MY FAVOURITE MOVIE:

I recently watched Ophelia (2018). It was amazing. I can't stop raving about the cinematography and the attention to detail. In my opinion, this is a much watch for the month of April.

MY FAVOURITE TV SERIES:

You may recognize this show from my November favourites: For All Mankind. AppleTV+ is offering the entirety of season one for free to stream. You don't need a subscription or need to pay any money to watch this great show. (It's just been green lighted for a second season!)

MY FAVOURITE PLANT:

I've been getting into gardening this month! My garden is currently inside but I am looking forward to beginning to plant some of my own produce to supplement what I usually get from the farmer's market or store. My favourite plant to grow is lettuce. It's delicious, green and so much better when grown at home. Best of all, you don't need very much space for this item.

MY FAVOURITE MAKEUP:

As I slowly use up my current makeup, I am beginning to downsize my collection and invest in more clean and animal-friendly brands. I have incredible sensitive skin so most of the makeup I already own is gluten-free, vegan and clean. My favourite makeup product this month is from Rocky Mountain Soap Co. I am obsessed with their tinted lip balm in Hibiscus Pink! I bought this product last year and lost it, only to find it in April and begin using it.

This lip balm is not tested on animals, GMO free, made in Canada, and has sustainable bio-degradable/recyclable packaging.

Rocky Mountain Soap Co. even has a few suggestion on how to upcycle the packaging. (For example, using the empty paper pots to start seedlings!)

Let me know your favourite ethical sources brands. I need a few suggestions.

MY FAVOURITE RECIPE:

I've been eating TACOS, TACOS AND more TACOS. With the current global situation, I haven't gone out very much and completely stopped eating takeout. I've had to develop a bunch of recipes to curb my cravings. I have been absolutely obsessed with making tacos. Avocado and lime tacos with black beans and a corn tortilla shell have been one of my go-to recipes. I've also been making my own spicy taco sauce and adding it to black beans, locally sourced meat and rice. So delicious!

MY FAVOURITE ARTICLE OF CLOTHING: (Ie. The one were I cried.)

When I decided to make the switch to a more sustainable lifestyle I didn't think that the biggest hurdle would be finding eco-friendly clothing brands. This task has made me cry, frustrated me and even made me wonder why I was attempting to be more Earth-friendly.

My plan was not to completely re-vamp my wardrobe, instead I wanted to slowly replace worn out pieces with more sustainable, long-lasting staples. (Who else here goes through white shirts like crazy?! They get super worn out, sheet and get holes.)

I began my search and quickly realized that while there were quite a few brands that were eco-friendly, they didn't have anything that was right for me. I had a lot of difficulty finding something that was decently priced, and/or petite and appropriate for someone my age. I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars for a t-shirt online that might not fit and could possible not be very well made.

I have yet to find a sustainable brand. Let me know if you have any recommendations.

So what is my favourite article of clothing, if I had such trouble?

My favourite article of clothing is a black turtleneck that I already owned. I began experimenting with wearing it with different jeans, skirts and accessories and I'm loving it. My suggestion to you before you go out and purchase new clothes, see if you can reuse what you have.

MY FAVOURITE DESTINATION:

The mountains. Check out these posts for more information about travelling in the mountains.

A TRAVEL BLOGGER'S
MY FAVOURITE WAY TO DETOX FROM SOCIAL MEDIA:

Something that I didn't realize that I needed so badly was a break from my social media. I took a short break from perusing the web and it's been amazing. Did I stop using my social media completely? No. But I found a bunch of ways to cut back while still be productive and sleeping better in the process.

MY TIPS:

Put your electronics away 30 minutes before you plan to go to bed.

Put a cap on your online time.
  • Set a limit for how many times you will check your social media each day. For example: Allow yourself 2  x 10 minute sessions on Instagram a day, with one day off a week. Allow yourself 15 minutes on Twitter/ a day. Make a schedule and try your best to stick to it. Don't feel discouraged if you don't make your goal each day though!
Take 5 - 15 minutes of 'YOU' time each morning before you start doing anything. Stretch, drink some water, look out your window, practice positive affirmations, meditate, etc.

MY FAVOURITE TV ANNOUNCEMENT:

Netflix finally announced the release date for season two of The Umbrella Academy, July 31st, 2020.
